Soil moisture grids
1 km and 12.5 km soil moisture grids are available for April 2015 to December 2017. The bands are 0–10 (exceptionally low), 10–25 (notably low), 25–40 (below normal), 40–55 (normal), 55–70 (above normal), 70–85 (notably high), 85–100 (exceptionally high)).
The point extraction (timeseries graphs) for soil moisture retrieves a value that is taken from the 12.5 km grid.

Drought indices
The UK Drought Portal is no longer available. To view the Standardised Precipitation Index (SPI) for the UK, and other monthly drought indices, select the Drought indices option at the top left of the Portal window.
About the UK Water Resources Portal
This is a web tool for displaying water resources and drought information based on:
- River flows from the National River Flow Archive (NRFA, updated monthly)*, Environment Agency (EA, updated daily) and Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA, updated daily).
- Rainfall from the Met Office (provided on a grid, and aggregated up to gauging station catchments and river basins) (updated monthly).
- Soil moisture from UKCEH's COSMOS-UK soil moisture network (updated daily).
- Groundwater levels from the British Geological Survey* (updated monthly).
More information
Please note that:
- Near real-time river flows are only available for England and Scotland — these come from the EA Hydrology data service and SEPA data service respectively.
- River flow data for the last few days is often not available via the data services — step back a few days to see the most recent data, or switch to monthly data.
- Dotted lines on the river flow graphs mean data remain unchecked (by EA/SEPA) and may be erroneous.
- River flow data for Wales and Northern Ireland, rainfall and groundwater data and the standardised indices are currently only available to the end of the previous month.
